Kuopio
Kuopio is a wonderful city full of culture, when meaning different attractions, exhibitions, concerts and other things to see and explore. The city of Kuopio was founded in 1775, so Kuopio's history is long and the city still has many reminders from the past in its city centre. Kuopio Cathedral, St. Nikolaos Cathedral, Market Hall and town square and the old wooden houses in the city centre are the obvious tourist attractions. It is also necessary to conquer the Puijo Tower, which has been the symbol of this city for a long time. By the way, the current tower is already the 3rd generation of the Puijo Tower.
If you are interested in arts and museums, Kuopio has a various museums regarding old Kuopio history, war history, art history, natural history and others. Especially Kuopio Art Museum, Kuopio Museum and Old Kuopio Museum are the “must see” museums in Kuopio to have an great overall view of Kuopio and its history. Also the VB Photographic Centre is really worth seeing. It has changing exhibitions so be sure you check what exhibitions they are showing.
Kuopio is a city with many bars, restaurants and nightclubs so there are also every week different bands and artists in different places in Kuopio. So if you are interested in Finnish rock, pop, soul, dance and other music, that will be no problem at all. There are a lot to choose from. If you are interested in classical music and other orchestral music, Kuopio Music Centre is the place for you.
Kuopio has a small and humble cinema Finnkino Star, which shows every week the newest, mainly main stream American, films with Finnish subtitles. There is also the cinema Kuvakukko, which shows a more variable and “not-the-blockbuster” films around the world. Kuvakukko has a special student union film club: One semester, 20 euros and new film every thursday overall 12 films per semester.
